Project Manager Digital Services and Infrastructure

Are you the driving force behind innovative IT for digital collections, digital preservation and Open Science? Then come work at the University Library of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

Your function

As a project manager, you play a key role in the digital transformation of the University Library (UL). You initiate and lead projects that contribute to a future-proof digital infrastructure supporting library processes, digital collections and research information. You operate in a multidisciplinary environment, assembling project teams with colleagues from various departments, such as Special Collections and Research Support. Working alongside functional administrators, metadata specialists, curators and information professionals, you translate user needs into practical IT solutions. You guide projects from requirements gathering through implementation and integration into the organization. You are involved in strategic projects such as Living Collections, where you work on sustainable access to digital heritage, replacing the e-depot, implementing a collection management system for archives, and developing policies around licensing and copyright. You also oversee the final stages of the procurement process for a new library system. In addition, you play a pivotal role in expanding infrastructure for Open Science, improving access to research information and reducing reliance on major IT vendors. You stay up to date with technological developments, maintain a broad (inter)national network and translate new insights into concrete improvements – contributing to an innovative, user-focused library.

Your duties

  • apply a project-based approach in collaboration with UL teams, VU faculties and services to define user requirements and functional specifications for IT systems and workflows
  • assemble and lead project teams, involving UL staff such as information specialists, curators, functional administrators and metadata experts, as well as external stakeholders
  • set up effective project structures, define project scope and plans with clear objectives, budgets, timelines and constraints
  • closely monitor progress and report to the steering committee and UL management team
  • keep stakeholders engaged and build support through clear communication about project impact
  • contribute to strategic vision and future development of the UL’s digital infrastructure

Your profile

  • you hold a university-level (HBO/WO) degree and have extensive project management experience in complex IT environments within research and education institutions
  • you demonstrate strong leadership and team management skills in a project-based setting, using methodologies such as Prince2 or Agile/Scrum to deliver results
  • you can manage multiple projects with varying timelines, maintain oversight and effectively guide technically skilled team members
  • you have a proactive, entrepreneurial mindset, turn ideas into action and maintain a broad (inter)national network in digital heritage and research support
  • you are customer-oriented and an excellent communicator, able to clearly explain technical concepts in both Dutch and English

We believe that diversity in all its complexity is invaluable for the quality of our teaching, research and service. We are always looking for talent with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
