Since our founding, we have stood for scientific and values-based education, research and valorisation: science with a conscience.
We are a multidisciplinary university with teaching and research in the alpha, beta, gamma and medical sciences. Multidisciplinary in design, along four societal themes:

• Human Health and Life Science
• Science for Sustainability

History
VU Amsterdam was founded in 1880 as a private initiative with strong links to the Protestant Christian population of the Netherlands. We are still a university with a strong social commitment.
Social safety & behaviour
VU Amsterdam aims to contribute to society through education, research and valorisation. This requires a safe working and learning environment, where staff, students and guests treat each other with respect. Because social security is something we do together. This is the only way we can work towards a better world.

Our core values of responsible, open and personally engaged are the foundation of our research and teaching.
We demonstrate service and commitment to people and society. We are accessible and open to diversity of disciplines, cultures, ideas, nationalities, beliefs and worldviews. We are attentive to and respectful of each individual, and each member of our community is known.
Code of conduct
VU Amsterdam has established a Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct describes how we put our core values into practice. In a safe, respectful and inspiring working environment, we can find solutions together.
