VU University Amsterdam is committed to a better world and a sustainable future. No matter how big today's challenges are, we approach them with optimism. Because we believe in the unprecedented potential of collaboration. That is why we look beyond the boundaries of disciplines in our research and teaching. Since our founding, we have stood for scientific and values-based education, research and valorisation: science with a conscience.
We are a multidisciplinary university with teaching and research in the alpha, beta, gamma and medical sciences. Multidisciplinary in design, along four societal themes:
• Connected World
• Governance for Society
• Human Health and Life Science
• Science for Sustainability
This is how we encourage the collaboration called for by the social problems of today and tomorrow.
Besides our 9 faculties, we have 9 divisions that make our research, teaching and valorisation possible.

VU Amsterdam was founded in 1880 as a private initiative with strong links to the Protestant Christian population of the Netherlands. We are still a university with a strong social commitment.
VU Amsterdam aims to contribute to society through education, research and valorisation. This requires a safe working and learning environment, where staff, students and guests treat each other with respect. Because social security is something we do together. This is the only way we can work towards a better world.
Our core values of responsible, open and personally engaged are the foundation of our research and teaching.
We demonstrate service and commitment to people and society. We are accessible and open to diversity of disciplines, cultures, ideas, nationalities, beliefs and worldviews. We are attentive to and respectful of each individual, and each member of our community is known.
VU Amsterdam has established a Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct describes how we put our core values into practice. In a safe, respectful and inspiring working environment, we can find solutions together.
Working together for a better world is easier in a work environment that inspires, develops and engages. For this purpose, we have formulated the Art of Engagement with the following four principles:
VU Amsterdam believes in collaboration. We are convinced that our differences make us stronger. That is why we work to be a diverse and inclusive university. We promote an environment where everyone feels welcome and can make their voice heard. Because diversity enriches.

Everyone has their own perspective and talents. That is why we ensure that people with an occupational disability can also work at the VU. VU Amsterdam colleagues with an occupational disability work in a wide variety of positions. Want to know how they enjoy it? Read or watch the interviews with some VU employees.
The Participation Service Point supports and advises VU Amsterdam in the recruitment and support of colleagues with a disability. Do you have a occupational disability, are you registered in the target group register and would you like to work for us? Then get in touch with us. Send an email to [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you and seeing what opportunities VU Amsterdam can offer you.
the student population at VU Amsterdam is culturally diverse, which is why we invest in cultural diversity among our staff. With the Colourful Staff Action Plan, we are working on inclusive recruitment, work and recognition .
