Junior lecturer(s) in Art and Culture

Your function

To strengthen the Department of Art and Culture, History and Antiquity, we are looking for one or two junior lecturers with a specialization in Media, Art, Architecture and/or Design studies and with experience in teaching at bachelor level. We especially appreciate affinity with the fields of Media and/or Design studies.  

Within the Department of Art and Culture, History and Antiquity, the section of Art and Culture provides a number of international programmes in Dutch and English. As a lecturer, you will co-teach courses, co-supervise theses and supervise internships and work placements at the bachelor level (MKDA). You will work in a multi- and interdisciplinary fashion and contribute to the development and improvement of our teaching programme. You keep track of publications in your field and integrate insights from recent academic literature into the curriculum. In addition, you fulfill management and administrative tasks such as participation in team meetings and membership of the education or examination committee. Your appointment consists of 90% teaching and 10% administration and management.

Your profile

Suitable candidates meet the following requirements:

  • you have a demonstrable affinity with visual and material culture, evidenced by a master degree in Media Studies, Art History, Design Cultures, Architectural History or a more interdisciplinary equivalent.
  • you are enthusiastic and skilled in academic teaching
  • you are in possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO), or are willing to obtain this within the foreseeable future
  • you are a team player and are willing to contribute to activities of the Art and Culture section
  • you have an excellent command of Dutch and English

What do we offer?

We offer a temporary appointment for 2 years with option of extension and with a probationary period of 1 year. The appointment will begin on July 1st, 2025 (or slightly later, if necessary), allowing time to prepare for the first courses, which start in early September 2025. Please note that basic teaching materials are already available for all courses you will be teaching.

The salary, depending on education and experience, amounts to a minimum of € 3.378  (scale 10) and a maximum of € 4.227 (scale 10) gross per month on a full-time basis. The position fits the UFO profile Docent 4, for a total of 0.7 fte, to be divided between one or two lecturers.

We also offer you attractive fringe benefits and regulations. Some examples:

  • a full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • solid pension scheme (ABP)
  • contribution to commuting expenses
  • optional model for designing a personalized benefits package

Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities

The new Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities aspires to be the intellectual and philosophical core of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Its mission is to enhance the self-understanding of humanity and society, to interpret cultural, social, and political developments and to study the nature of institutions and cultural artifacts in an age of artificial intelligence in which science, morality and religion are both juxtaposed and opposed.
