Location: AMSTERDAM
FTE: 0,8 - 1

Job description

The candidate will strengthen the high-latitude (Arctic, Boreal) research of the Hydrology and Biogeochemistry group. The ongoing high-latitude research in the department covers diverse themes such as catchment hydrology and biogeochemistry, land-ocean organic matter transport, boreal fires, and greenhouse gas fluxes. Our close collaborations with other groups working on remote sensing, carbon cycle dynamics, climate modelling, and marine geology lay a strong foundation on which to build your own research. We welcome a candidate with research expertise and experience in the hydrosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, or atmosphere and their interactions, using techniques and applications from the fields of hydrology, biogeochemistry, and/or sedimentology (ranging from e.g. eddy covariance to tracer isotope analyses). She/he ideally has a mixed background in experimental work and modeling.

Your duties
  • carry out creative research by acquiring external funding and publishing your results in scientific journals
  • make impact on the field as witnessed by a variety of indicators, for example, invited presentations at (international) meetings, media coverage, and peer recognition
  • build a successful research group and supervise PhD students
  • coordinate and teach courses offered in BSc and MSc Earth Science and Hydrology programs (ca. 40% teaching time commitment, 20% in first year)
  • contribute to development of the teaching curriculum

Requirements

We offer a challenging position for someone with
  • a PhD degree on a topic relevant to what is outlined in the job description above, preferably with some post-PhD research experience (proven by publications)
  • demonstrated ability to initiate and develop an independent line of research
  • experience in teaching (development and/or coordination of courses) in the field of Earth Sciences
  • a basic teaching qualification (BKO), an equivalent qualification from a university outside the Netherlands, or willingness to obtain such a qualification during the tenure track
  • although not a requirement at the date of appointment, it is expected that a C1 level in both Dutch and English will be reached before the end of the tenure track. The department offers BSc courses in Dutch, and MSc courses in English
